Balchhi Dhurra Pass: Two High Passes, Seven Days, and Barely Anyone Else on the Trail

Let's witness a side of Kumaon almost nobody treks through

I've walked a fair number of trails through Kumaon over the years — rhododendron forests, high meadows, glacier viewpoints crowded with photographers waiting for the light. Balchhi Dhurra isn't any of that. This is the trek you take when you want to give yourself a real break — from work, from noise, from other trekkers too. Embrace complete isolation, walk the paths seldom walked upon, and for seven days, live what's alive around you instead of what's on your phone

About the Balchhi Dhurra Pass Route

Balchhi Dhurra is a very unique track that runs via two high passes, Daranti Khal and Balchhi Dhurra itself, as well as rolling high-altitude meadows and wild shepherd hideouts that most Kumaon trekking organizations don't even provide tours through. This walk is firmly in severe high-altitude territory, with a maximum altitude of 4,400 meters. This is a true pass-to-pass crossing through pure wilderness, the type of area that remains uninhabited because so few people are aware of it. It is not a weekend meadow walk.

Duration & Level of Balchhi Dhurra Pass in Kumaon

t's a 7-day trek, Kathgodam to Kathgodam. This year 2026, it is running from 2nd to 8th October with Wildrift Adventures. We've graded it Challenging, and we mean it. Between the altitude, the terrain, and the sheer isolation of the route, this one is built for trekkers who already have a few Himalayan treks behind them — not a first outing into the mountains.

Why a Team Matters Here - High Altitude trek in Uttarakhand

On a trail this remote, you won't run into other groups to borrow gear from or check directions with. Crossing two passes back-to-back means you need people around you who actually know this terrain — someone managing pace and route-finding, someone watching how the weather's shifting at altitude, someone who can read a shepherd trail that isn't marked on any map app. On a route like this, trekking with an experienced local team isn't a nice-to-have. It's what turns the isolation into freedom instead of risk

Health & Preparation Before Experiencing Balchhi Dhurra Pass

At 4,400 meters, altitude has a far greater influence on your week than your legs. Before you go there, start increasing your stamina by doing things like hiking, climbing stairs, or anything that makes your heart function the way it will up there. Throughout the hike, be well hydrated, eat even if the altitude kills your appetite, and if your body tells you to slow down, don't push yourself to the top. When camping, bring a thick layer of clothing because October nites over 4,000 meters decrease quickly.

Best Time to Go for Balchhi Dhurra Pass

Early October sits right after monsoon clears out of Kumaon — the meadows are still green, the skies are washed clean, and the shepherd huts along the route are often still in seasonal use before the herders head back down for winter. It's a narrow window, and this year's departure is timed straight into the middle of it.

Certain hikes are done to cross off a summit. You do this, Balchhi Dhurra, to recall the true sound of quiet at 4,400 meters. This is the one if two high passes and seven days of almost complete seclusion seem like precisely what you need right now.
