Summary
The trek begins from Munsiyari, the fabled Kumaon town, reigned by the close Panchchuli peaks view. Winds its way into the Ralam Valley meadows strewn with sheep, flowers and wilderness.
Beyond Ralam village we have the first glacier crossing with a high ascent Yangchari base camp. That’s where the isolation begins. The next day we are crossing the Yangchari pass into the Chaudhara glacial arena. Spectacular ring of high peaks with a trek across the glacier to the hidden Ralam Dhura base camp next to the Chaudhara peak.
After crossing the Ralam Dhurra pass into the Darma valley which entails a strange long descent along the Nipakchung glacier. The return is through the remote Darma valley with a recently built road most of the way.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Drive to Munsyari from Kathgodam 277 km by jeep.
Day 2
Get permits In Munsyari. Trek to Paton village (6 km) (1950 m) located in the middle of the forest above the Gori Ganga.
Day 3
Trek through the deep forests and steep mountain sides to Lungrani (11km).
Day 4
Lungrani to riverside Kilatham located in the wide open trans-Himalayan meadows. Camp out before Ralam village (12 km).
Day 5
Ralam village to Ralam glacier total 9 km trek (3600 m) – total isolation.
Day 6
Steep ascent to Yankchuri base camp 10 km (4250 m).
Day 7
Rest day and acclimatisation – explore the Brahma kamal and other native plants in the meadows immersed in the sun all day.
Day 8
Cross Yankchuri pass pass at 4700 m to Ralam Dhura base camp (5250 m) – the icy wildreness and perfect stillness.
Day 9
Climb upto Ralam pass (5630 m) through sculpted ice in various glacial forms to descend 10 km from the Nipakchung meadows.
Day 10
Walk to Dantu village (16 km) facing the Panchchuli peaks. A lovely sunny day filled with flowers along the river. Stay in tents/village houses – Panchchuli views.
Day 11
Day hike to Dantu village to Panchachuli Base camp and come back to Dantu village.
Day 12
Dantu to Dharchula (5 hours drive) through the dramatic higher Himalayas along the Dhauli Ganga river. You can visit the Nepal side of Dharchula.
Day 13
Jeep transfers from Dharchula to Kathgodam to take the train back to Delhi.
