Nanda Kund Trek

This trip offers slices of the Himalayan experience for everyone. A chance to bond as families through a combination of leisure, adventure, trekking and cultural interactions along a section of the Namik Ramganga river valley. The drive up is through the heartland of Kumaon and offers insights into the beauty of the Kumaon hills.

Beautiful walks, intense hikes through ancient villages and high altitude meadows. We stop by small villages and ancient temples, mingle with the local inhabitants, camp along the route in rolling meadows, forest fringes, bathe under waterfalls and swim in icy pools with eternal Himalayas in constant view. Welcome to the magic.

Camp Shaama

Perched on a mountain top in the Gyandhura village (Shaama) is about 50 km ahead of Bageshwar town. The site offers spectacular close-up views of the Himalaya above the Ramganga valley. Here you are in the heart of the Central Himalayan wilderness surrounded by the biggest Indian peaks – Nanda Devi (7848 m), Nanda Kot (6861 m), Trishul (7120 m).

Namik village is rich in heritage and is known for work like carpet weaving (a specialty of this valley), making natural dyes and ropes from natural fibres. We will hike through the Namik valley and see the disappearing way of life in remote mountain villages.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: (23rd October)

Board the morning Shatabdi from New Delhi at 06:00 and reach Kathgodam at 11:40 followed by 3 hrs drive for DaanKudi, Ranikhet

Post Lunch: Short hike through the ‘valley of the sun’.

Great walk with binoculars / landscape photography. Terraced farmlands /old stone houses.

The route takes you through the hills to visit fascinating structures like the Siddheshwar temple with traditional water filtration system and the abandoned stone made “pool of the gods” in the forest, an old ‘Jagran’ house in the village and across the valley floor to the only sun temple in the Indian Himalayas – a small stone structure – old architecture with ancient images.

The circular route leads back to the village.

Note: Those interested in bird watching may take a separate route.

Return to the house in the evening for evening tea in the courtyard.

Day 2: (24th October)

Post breakfast drive from Ranikhet to Camp Shaama via Kausani (5 hrs).

Camp Shaama: Reach Shaama by noon. From here we hike along the ‘Gyan Dhura’ ridge for 3 km to reach a small tabletop at an altitude of 7500 ft. Here you are in the heart of the Central Himalayan wilderness surrounded by the biggest Indian peaks – Nanda Devi (7848 m), Nanda Kot (6861 m), Trishul (7120 m). We stay in small stone cottages just above the beautiful Gyan Dhura village. The site offers a spectacular 270 degrees view of the Himalayas up close, as the land drops away on all sides into vast forested valleys of the gleaming Ramganga below.

Deep relaxation on sunlight terraces, clear blue skies and spectacular Himalayan sunsets.

Enjoy a warm campfire.

Overnight at the Camp Shaama.

Day 3: (25th October)

Shaama to Rathir.

Trek 12 km. Spectacular valleys and gorges along the route.

Camp out in Rathir village.

Day 4: (26th October)

Rathir to Namik village (9 km). Cross the Ramganga river.

Overnight camp in open meadows above the village.

Day 5: (27th October)

Naamik village to Thalthok (11 km uphill). Trek through dense Rhododendron forests and beautiful meadows. Camp out.

Day 6: (28th October)

Trek Thalthok to Nanda Kund. Camp out (Please note that the route will depend upon the current snow conditions)

Day 7: (29th October)

Explorations at Nanda Kund – Nanda Kund is a charming lake located at the foothills of the Nanda Devi Peak, in Uttaranchal. It is also known by the name Devi Kund. According to legends, a mythical character named Nanda took a bath in the lake and attained the status of a ‘Devi’ (goddess). This lake is hence considered as divine. One of the notable peaks in the vicinity is the majestic Maiktoli Peak.

Day 8: (30th October)

Nandakund – Thalthok 13km downhill trek. Start the return leg of the trek.

Day 9: (31st October)

Thalthok–Bala (14 km) trek downhill. Transfer in jeeps to Ramganga Camp (1 hr. drive). Overnight at the camp.

Day 10: (1st November)

Start on an early morning drive to Kathgodam (8 hrs).
