The 4778 m high Roopkund lake in the Chamoli
District in Uttaranchal, is also known
as the Mystery Lake for it contains still
well preserved human and equine skeletal
remains of over 300 people and animals,
estimated to have perished in the lake
over 500 years ago. Experts have put forward
several theories to explain the findings
but the mystery remains to be fully explained.
The theories range from the local lore
about a king's visit to the lake and the
subsequent disaster that overtook the
entire regime of the king at the lake
about 550 years ago to the remains being
those of the strugglers of General Zorawar
Singh's army after his defeat at the hands
of the Tibetan Army near Taklakot (Tibet)
in 1842.
The Nanda Raj Jat, the pilgrimage trek
every 12 years of about 280 km in August-September,
unique to the people of Chamoli, has been
passing through the Roopkund since the
19th century.
This trek can be started from either Ghat,
19 km from Nand Prayag or Debal of the
Pindar River both being roadheads.
